Dale Pickett is an extremely talented photographer in the Indianapolis area. He does work for many different types of clients and jobs but he has such a professional edge to all of his work that we wanted to come across on the site. He already had a color scheme in mind so we worked with that and built the site using a wide and deep variety of images.

Light. See. Art. Studio was one of the first websites I completed as part of a school project in the very beginning of my understanding of web site design practices and principles. I used this particular site because I am very good friends with the artist, Annie Lightsey, and also because I love her art and wanted to have a part in her successfully establishing her brand and getting her work out to new clients. I can say happily that the site has done very well at marketing to people at events that aren’t always close to home. It is a way for people to become familiar with Annie and her work and has also lead to the sale of more than a few pieces of her work.

I designed a site that was dark so her work would pop out of the galleries. The typography was used to reflect a clean and professional aesthetic to reflect her business organization. The biggest part of the approach to designing this site and Annie’s brand was to really have the art speak for itself. Keeping this in mind, I made sure that the site stayed out of the way of the product. It was there to house her work and project the professional quality put into the art and business.

Much like her logo, Sally really wanted her website to have a lot of contrast and “pop” while maintaining an elegant and professional quality that reflects her work. We went through many drafts, background images and color schemes before ultimately reaching our final product. Her website has the “new classic” layout that is being utilized by many businesses big and small. This ensures it looks professional and will stand up well against competitor sites so her work could do all of the talking!

While designing her logo, I had to keep in mind that her logo would be not only on her website and business card but would also likely be on fliers for events as well as put on some of her works and many other potential applications. So for her logo, I needed something that would stand out and still look natural in these sorts of applications. This lead me to using bold primary colors ad also leaving the background “empty.” This means the logo taks on the background color of the medium.

My goal for the website was to just expand the logo out into the web. I wanted to look hand drawn with simple colors and shapes. I used the elements form the logo background and applied them to the page background. Green grass, blue sky, and even some clouds for accent. I did this to really establish unity from the logo to the site. This way it all looks like it was done with intent. Which is good, because it always is.

As a dog lover, when I had the opportunity to work with Howard County Dog Parks, I was excited to offer my help. My first and final idea was to use my sister’s dog Mackey in the design. Hey, I can do that, I’m the artist! This was a logo I developed that did not need to many drafts and revisions. They liked my original direction and it was mostly just some minor tweaks away from the final logo.
